Joel Kleinbaum has been playing bassoon since age 12 and clarinet since age 10. Joel took a hiatus from the clarinet in order to study for a Bachelor of Music in bassoon performance from Boston University. While at Boston University, he studied with legendary bassoonists Matthew Ruggiero and Sherman Walt. Joel has played bassoon professionally with the Des Moines Metro Opera. He played klezmer clarinet in the San Francisco Bay Area informally, with several different musicians. Joel currently plays bassoon with Classical Revolution PDX, Charis & Friends, and as part of a bassoon and piano duo with Music Studio Director, Daniel Fitzmaurice. Joel's first teaching experience was in middle school, when the band director asked him to help out a new bassoonist. Since that time, Joel has coached and trained vocal ensembles for non-profit organizations, and trained 12-year olds for Bar/Bat Mitzvah. Joel brings a passion for music, including classical, opera, jazz, and klezmer along with a love of teaching. Joel is delighted to take students of all ages, and beginners are very welcome. | ![]() Joel Kleinbaum Bassoon, Clarinet, Music Appreciation, & Opera Appreciation |
